KOZJANSKO REGIONAL PARK

On the north side of the Bistrica River, next to the Trebče pond, stands Kolar’s homestead, which in 2024 was given a new look and a new story. In Kolar’s house, a new Info Centre for Amphibians in Kozjansko Park – Frog Homestead – was created within the LIFE AMPHICON project.

The Frog Homestead presents interesting facts from the world of amphibians. It describes the amphibian species found in Kozjansko Park and in the nearby Natura 2000 sites, as well as the habitats in which they live. It explains the factors that threaten this group and brings together important measures to conserve amphibian populations, while visitors will also have the opportunity to listen to selected species.

Below the homestead, you can see the Trebče pond, which is today the most important habitat for many amphibians in the area. In spring, toads and frogs lay their webs here, and occasionally a newt can be seen. Around the pond, there is an educational trail where you can follow the life of amphibians throughout the year – from spring migration to autumn preparations for overwintering – with information boards.

The homestead has been an important part of the Kozjansko Park since its establishment in 1981 (then as the Trebče Memorial Park) and is inextricably linked to the life of former Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito. His aunt, Ana Kolar (née Javeršek), and his cousin, Ana Kostanjšek, lived here, he loved to visit them, and also held meetings there before the Second World War.
