The Kozjansko and Obsotelje Biosphere Reserve was admitted to the global network on 2 June 2010, becoming the third biosphere reserve in Slovenia. Its management was entrusted to the Kozjansko Park Public Institute, headquartered in Podsreda.
Within the Kozjansko Regional Park, there are seven special protected areas – Natura 2000 sites (one designated under the Birds Directive and six under the Habitats Directive), which we manage in accordance with the provisions of the Management Programme (PUN).
The Kozjansko Regional Park is one of the oldest and largest protected areas in Slovenia.
It lies at the meeting point of the Alpine and Pannonian worlds in eastern Slovenia, between the Sotla River and Bohor Hill.
The protected area covers 206 km², holds the status of a regional park, and spans five municipalities: Kozje, Bistrica ob Sotli, Podčetrtek, Brežice, and Krško.
Kozjansko Park is distinguished by its preserved high-stem meadow orchards, upland dry grasslands, beech forests, and wet meadows along the Sotla River.
Natural science research continually reveals exceptionally high levels of biodiversity in this area.
Since 2004, the majority of the park (69%) has been included in Slovenia’s ecologically important areas and in the Natura 2000 network of special conservation areas of European importance.
In 2021, the Kozjansko Park Public Institute received the international UNESCO–Greece Melina Mercouri Award, which is presented for outstanding achievements in the protection and management of world cultural landscapes.
