KOZJANSKO REGIONAL PARK

ABOUT THE REGIONAL PARK

The Kozjansko Regional Park is one of the oldest and largest protected areas in Slovenia.

It lies at the meeting point of the Alpine and Pannonian worlds in eastern Slovenia, between the Sotla River and Bohor Hill.

The protected area covers 206 km², holds the status of a regional park, and spans five municipalities: Kozje, Bistrica ob Sotli, Podčetrtek, Brežice, and Krško.

Kozjansko Park is distinguished by its preserved high-stem meadow orchards, upland dry grasslands, beech forests, and wet meadows along the Sotla River.

Natural science research continually reveals exceptionally high levels of biodiversity in this area.

NATURA 2000

Since 2004, the majority of the park (69%) has been included in Slovenia’s ecologically important areas and in the Natura 2000 network of special conservation areas of European importance.

UNESCO MAB
Since 2010, the wider Kozjansko and Obsotelje area has held the status of the Kozjansko and Obsotelje Biosphere Reserve within UNESCO’s MAB (Man and the Biosphere) Programme.
UNESCO AWARD

In 2021, the Kozjansko Park Public Institute received the international UNESCO–Greece Melina Mercouri Award, which is presented for outstanding achievements in the protection and management of world cultural landscapes.
